Reasons to be Cheerful

The Sun came out today. There is no snow. I’m wearing the boots I love rather than the sensible shoes that don’t slip on ice. I am only wearing two jumpers. I am not wearing long johns. I am warm. I know what’s wrong with my book. I can fix it.

What does a publisher do? Is there a point to having one? As a species are publishers dead?

Nice guys don’t finish last… they just finish slowly

In the immediate world of the internet, it seems that many writers are getting disheartened when their works fail to go instantly viral. Sure, when a book with as few redeeming features as 50 Shades explodes the way it has, it’s a little galling but is ‘overnight success’ the be all and end all?

For those of us who are normal and who have to balance their book marketing time with actual writing time and Real Life there’s no shame in building an audience slowly.

I’ve got my mojo working baby and I’m gonna try it out on you…

Once again, I am at home to Mr Cock up. Frankly, he’s going to be moving in at this rate. I dunno what’s wrong with me at the moment. I seem to be dead from the neck up.

So, now that I’ve bombed, I may as well tell you what I’ve learned so you don’t have to.

The Overnight Success Myth and Other Stories…

I’m not sure why this has come up now but I’ve found myself discussing the hard work aspect of becoming a writer quite a lot over the past week.

Also, with the attitude of some independent authors and the hardening attitute among readers it has caused, I am beginning to wonder whether self publishing is quite such a smart option. It’s definitely right for me at the moment, but long-term smart? I’m not sure.

Run with me on this, eventually the two thoughts will connect.

Is ‘indie’ the new ‘crap’?

Is there still a stigma attached to self publishing?

As an indie music fan, I have always associated the word ‘independent’ with quality. People who have ploughed their own furrow, refused to compromise their artistic integrity and done their own thing.

Slowly, slowly

It’s beginning to happen. The cover picture for The Wrong Stuff has filtered through from Nielsen to Amazon. For some bizarre reason, this tiny steop has left me almost dribbling and incoherent with happiness.
